Whew!! I finally finished it today. I've been working on this little Balloon quilt since the summer of 2012. I've actually worked on other quilts longer, but this has taken a lot of work. It's little circles, starched, ironed and stitched onto white material. Then each balloon is tethered to it's bunch by embroidered strings. I started out doing swirly lines using black thread, Then I looked at the quilt I saw for inspiration and this is how it was done. I like it better, I think. Almost every balloon is of different fabric. Quilt show in Moab this weekend!!
I've had this material for years and years and knew that someday I'd have the right quilt to use it on the back. I hand quilted in straight lines because I wanted to swerve around the balloons. The material is a nice blue that I don't think showed up too well here, but it's okay.
Here's a couple pictures of the quilt I took pictures of in an antique shop in Washington on that summer tour with Debbie Hughes. The quilt is appliqued all on one piece, but I did mine with 13 inch blocks cause I didn't want to lug around all that material as I worked on it. There are little ties on the bunches which I might add some day.
