This pattern is called a "string" quilt. You make a pattern from thin material or from thin paper. Then you sew strips using the "sew and flip" method, using the pattern as a guide for size. When you've covered the foundation block and pressed, you square it up. If the foundation is material, you leave it, making a heavier quilt or if you have a paper foundation, tear the paper away. I used the thin paper from an old telephone book, 5 1/4 inches square. When the sewing was finished, I sat out on the deck, enjoying the sun and pulling the paper away. It can be messy, I let the wind blow the paper bits away.
