Quilt Guild Challenge, 2114, Canyonlands

Each year the quilt guild has a challenge with a theme.  Anyone who wants to participate can make a small wallhanging with her interpretation of that theme.  The quilts are then  hung in the local museum for the months of May and June.  This year the theme is "Canyonlands".   The natural idea would be to use images of arches, I just wanted to use the red rock color and something that represented the indian culture in this area.  I love the idea and image of the "dreamcatcher".  It's very intriguing to me, the whole idea  So I hope this looks like a dream catcher.  I used a technique I had seen on Pinterest that is almost like reverse applique.  I made the background with orange/brown pieces using the split nine patch block.  Then I drew the image I wanted, the dream catcher with two feathers and some beads hanging down and a leather bow on top.  Then I put the blue fabric face on the back of the orange, the drawing over that, and sewed a steady line around the picture.  Then I could rip away the paper image, turned the quilt orange side up and cut the orange away inside the sewn lines, thus showing the blue material.  Then, I used embroidery thread to make the design inside the dream catcher and then quilted the whole thing in circular motion.  I haven't put the binding on yet, it will just be a simple orange/brown something.

Love the canyon colors and a very unique idea adding the dream catcher to it.
