It's kind of hard to see this but it's a small quilt, about 20"x18". Our quilt guild has a "challenge quilt" each spring and these quilts are displayed at the local museum in May and June. This year the challenge theme was "story quilts, written or spoken stories". When I heard this theme, I was very excited and thot of this old children's book I have with a story I found intriguing. We also had a class on this technique of painting fabric and creating "art" quilts. So I got out my pfd (prepared for dye) fabric, painted the swirls of color on it, drew the children in the bottom corner, and the items in the upper corner - kites, balloons, butterflies etc. I hand quilted it following the painted lines and sewed in some very small beads. The binding is dark blue fabric with small stars in it.
The book's name is "Attic of the Wind" by Doris Herold Lund. I abridged the story poem, printed it out and laminated it.
This is the poem: "What happens to things that blow away, Like the bubbles you blew one sunny day?/Where did they all go anyway? To the Attic of the Wind!/It's not an Attic you reach by stair/It's past the clouds and the stars somewhere./And what will we find if we play up there?/There are all of the snowflakes that didn't light/But whirled past your door on a snowy night./There are butterflies that flew too high/And lost themselves in the summer sky./Balloons in the Attic? of course there are/Lost at the fair or the church bazaar./And here are the kites that snapped their strings,/Then sailed to the Attic on paper wings!/And what of umbrellas that disappear/On a stormy day? Why, they're all up here!/There are hats blown off Aunts and mothers,/Sailors, policemen, and baby brothers./Party hats and paper crowns,/And hats belonging to circus clowns!/The golden sparks from a summer fire/That you watched fly high, and then still higher!/Yes the Attic of the Wind can store/All the world's lost treasure, and even more.../All the things you somehow let drift away/Aren't exactly lost. So before you cry/Why not look in the Attic in the Sky? "
I hope you like it.

Love it! I'm glad you remembered that poem! It's perfect for a story quilt! Wow! Love, MKG
What a beautiful poem! I love that whole idea - being a true romantic. Your quilt is so meaningfully representative of the idea of the poem. Good for you, talented lady and friend.
I wish you could read the whole poem in the book, maybe some day. Thanx for the comments, you all. SCD
I love the poem Shauna...it's beautiful. And it seems like it fits for a story quilt. Very whimsical and fun, and of course, artistic. :)
